SUNDIAL FOR REFLECTION OR catoptrics.

catoptrics Equatorial Sundial.

Building Sundials

As the sundial Diffraction, Solar clock by reflection indicator replaces the shadow of the gnomon when a beam of light. This feature would allow us to bring together this pair of sundials in a set that could be termed "Inverted Sundials." The name of this type of watch for reflection has been known since antiquity as catoptrics watches as art or science concerned with the reflection of light is called catoptrics.

In this post we will try to draw a clock "catoptrics" Equatorial dial from a plane mirror which reflected sunlight as a "needle of light" that pivot in the center of the quadrant the rhythm of nature will show us the real time.

As a first test project at a time, this clock is based on reflection watches Equatorial quadrant, as this kind of watches the easiest to do without resorting to complex formulas or the celestial coordinates and horizontal, then, just to be clear regarding the quadrants Equator where the divisions of the hours are achieved by simple division of the quadrant in equal angles uniformly distributed around the center of it is the source of the Nomon.

To understand the working principle of this watch Reflection Equatorial remember that Quadrant sundial Equatorial copied to perfection the diurnal motion of the Sun on the celestial sphere regardless of the season where we are. It can be shown easily with high school geometry that sundial effect of Equatorial dial, the Sun "tour" around the gnomon in as the day unfolds, so that the shadow of the style or Nomon performs the angular stroke 15 ° for each hour spent. This demonstration geometric leave it to the reader as a little mental exercise.

This sundial design Reflection Equatorial quadrant, style is replaced by a thin plane mirror, so that the light "bounces" a strip of light projected on the sundial that seems to arise from the origin of the hour lines. As the mirror has its reflective surface facing the sky and parallel to the axis of the world, reflected light reproduces the movement that would mirror the style shadow on the dial.

Due to the conceptual design of the clock, it provides a sundial graduated on both sides and can be placed in one of two preset positions on the support according to the time of year, the support of the quadrant is also support the flat mirror and shape ensures parallelism mirror with the axis of rotation of the Earth and celestial quadrant with Ecuador. On the mirror is placed a mask to expose a narrow reflective and thus generate the needle of light that marked the time.

The Reflection sundial that we are designing is located within the Tropic of Cancer, for this reason, the Sun in its annual roam the sky runs north-south through the zenith, so that the months of January, February, March, September, October, November, December and part of April, the sun is shining south sundial face looking in that direction, while in the months of April (part), May, June, July and August the sun is located north illuminating the other side of the sundial. This is the reason why it requires the Equatorial quadrant is graduated on both sides and why it occupies two different positions depending on whether the sun north or south.

The following images show the sundial sundial placed in the period in which the Sun is north and the position for the time when the sun is south respectively.

For this small project used a mirror Kaleidoscope surplus shown on another occasion, the dimensions of the plane mirror is 25 x 3 x 120 mm.

Due to the small size of the mirror, the clock is of modest size and the same is designed to make construction of cardboard 2 mm thick material I used for the realization of all other models of the different types of sundials shown in this Blog.

The image below shows the dimensional drawings of the different components of Refractive sundial.

The following figures show the clock templates
Sun

The elements identified as "media watch", are responsible for receiving the solar Equatorial quadrant and secure with the inclination with respect to the vertical equal to the latitude of the place, the components called "support mirror at the inside will stand watch from the dial slots on these parts is fixing the mirror that will serve light Nomon. The depth of slots receive the Solar quadrant includes the thickness of the glass mirror to the center of the dial face matches the platinum. Mirror is placed on the "mask" to allow only the reflection of a narrow beam of light to be projected onto the quadrant Equatorial. The thickness of the mask should be as short as possible and in my case I used only plain paper.

Better than words, the following series of photographs show us step by step process of manufacture and assembly of the sundial by reflection.

Reflection Clock Equatorial sundial near the Equator.

The clock designed here is calculated for the city of Puerto Ordaz (northern latitude of 8.27 °), so for other latitudes the angle indicated on the plans of 8.27 ° must be replaced by that of where they placed this small sundial reflection.

monitoring during the hours indicated by the sundial by reflection, I realized that it can not tell time below 10:30 AM or above approximately 1:30 pm, and that the "needle" indicator light is no longer visible. This defect has its origin in the mirror used and is not expected behavior during the design (Rookie mistake) clock for being focused on the main idea and ignoring some considerations. However, the practice sets the tone and gives us the opportunity to improve future buildings at the same time it encourages the search for the cause of the errors or deficiencies in the analysis performed.

By tracing the path of the reflected light rays, we realize quickly the cause of failure. The mirror used is normal glass where the platinum is at the bottom, so that from a certain angle of incidence bounced light is intercepted by the mask is in the glass above the mirror. The mask is 3 mm above the reflective layer that greatly restricts the hour angle light sweep of the needle as shown.

Despite this disturbing detail, the clock showed their operating principle based on the reflection of sunlight. The design can be improved significantly if we use a mirror, with platinum layer is on the top surface (I could not get) and not the bottom as the mirror used.

While this issue we try to develop a watch dial catoptrics Equatorial its simplicity, its operation opens a small gap that allows us to glimpse the possibilities of design for this type of solar watches by reflection, leaving readers' creative development thereof.

Soapy Taste In Mouth Woman

Macromedia Flash (*. SWF) in PowerPoint. EXCEL SPREADSHEET

INSERTING MACROMEDIA FLASH FILE (*. SWF) in PowerPoint.

Solving the problem of inserting Flash animations.

In more than one occasion I wanted to insert into a PowerPoint presentation a "video" made in FLASH with results negative, having to resort to "trick" to run the flash animation and make a recording of the screen.

Although this procedure is functional is also very limited as what is shown on the display is a copy of the animation as such without an option to use animation to its full potential.

Although I did several searches on the Internet, the procedures shown not work for me, perhaps for lack of clarity in some way or misinterpretation of the contents of articles that give explanations of how.

This problem happily
resolved is the reason for creating this post with the intention of the procedure even easier for those like me who do not achieve the objective for some reason.

My
I have been making presentations in PowerPoint 2007 by the greater flexibility that has this version on the 2003 so that the explanation I give is for the 2007, however, also applies to the PPT 2003 from its environment.

To avoid the first problem must be installed FlashPlayer player. If we have doubts about what went down and install from the Adobe website.

Opening PowerPoint 2007, we check if a tab on the options headband with the name of "program" as shown in the picture below.

tab If not, we press the big button (top left) where the Office logo and the window that opens will give you "click" the button "PowerPoint Options" in the popup window mark the box "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" accept and you should see the tab "PROGRAM."

With you open PPT file give to the Programs tab and in it, in the box "Control" give a click on the icon that has a hammer crossed with a tool, a window will open with a list of controls and look for "Shockwave Flash Object ". The image shows described.

We give the "OK" button, the cursor takes the shape of a cross and with it we draw a picture, which will have an "X" through it.

In the press box marked button "properties" and in the window that appears in the box "Playing" put "True" in the box "EmbedMovie" change the option to "False" to "True."

In the "Movie" put the full URL of the animation to insert. The URL must contain the name of the animation file you want in the presentation. Recall that in the URL the file of the animation must have the extension "swf"

done this
close the window and give it to "F5" to view the presentation, Flash animation should appear with all its controls and buttons active. The animation only runs in the mode of presentation.

may be the case when we have the URL of the animation and yet it does not see the extension "swf" file, whichever is the Flash animation will not run in our presentation. The way I solved this situation is looking Flash animation in temporary internet folder and run it from there to copy the correct URL.

To locate the file of the animation that we are interested in the folder "Temporary Internet files", enter "Internet Options" from Control Panel or from the "Tools" from Internet Explorer. In the window that opens, under the tab "General" give "click" the button "Settings" under "Browsing History", we give "View Files" opens a window where all files opened and saved in the folder "Temporary Internet files", there is the animation that we may not have the SWF extension to locate anything to go by the name that appears in the URL where the animation and look at the tab that says "Type" which has the description "Shockwave Flash Object", there you can see the URL or give you double click "the file to run, you must open a web page with video or animation only. Copy the URL and paste it into the presentation as described above.

Another option to insert a Flash animation is to locate the file of the animation that we want to ride on the PowerPoint presentation and copy in a folder on your hard disk.

the above steps to find the animation file in the folder "Temporary Internet", look for the file extension "swf", if you have the extension "swf" and discussed the case and not run the animation in the presentation, if you have the extension, copy the folder to another or the same where is the PowerPoint file.

To insert the animation is copied to your hard disk will perform all the steps already described from the first image, but in the "Movie" put the path where the file "SWF" for example: C: \\ Presentation \\ Details \\ load \\ animacion.swf. Close the box and press "F5" to see the animation.

I tested a PPT presentation with animation inserted in other computer where the file is not copied both PowerPoint 2007 and in 2003 (compatibility mode) and the animation has run perfectly, indicating that I do not need to drag SWF file of the animation along with the PowerPoint presentation.

I have the hope that this little post can fulfill its function with some bloggers, as in my case has not been inserted Flash animation in your presentation PPT.

, something to worry about.

EXCEL SPREADSHEET, something to worry about.
?....... Do you fail to EXCEL Calculation Problems ?...... Numerical errors "? ...
Spreadsheets
always sold as versatile tools and utilities to enable the handling of a lot of numbers and formulas with ease of repetitive calculations in an irreproachable manner and seriousness warranty software creator .

Because of this advantage have been using the EXCEL spreadsheet from Microsoft, both the 2003 version as the 2007 version.

Analemma During the development of the publication on the blog article "CHARTING THE analemma " I relied on this program for a series of repetitive calculations (over 576) of spherical geometry in a "mechanized" in order to reduce the manual and mental effort such repetition creates.

The idea was to determine the length and azimuth of the shadow that should generate a vertical rod to set the points to generate the Analemma Solar, as it would appear when projected on a horizontal sundial.

During the drawing of lines to generate the Analemma, I noticed that the figure showed some irregularities, repeatedly checking the results of EXCEL and plot lines with the computer aided design software I had no choice but to appeal to pocket calculator to verify the calculations made at the points where the finding with the idea of finding an error in the tables and data used in the spreadsheet. The results obtained with the manual procedure differed up to four digits (in my case were degrees inclination) with respect to the values produced by the spreadsheet. As much as I tried fails to find the cause of the discrepancy and concludes that it may be due to rounding used by the spreadsheet and trigonometric functions, or make a mistake that EXCEL.

This detail does not concern me more until I had to make a series of engineering calculations to estimate the pressure drop in a proportional valve. Again, the results started to diverge, gave values up to four digits apart. On this occasion there was no trigonometric functions and if you will, the formulas were relatively simple. But I discovered that if the EXCEL sheet made by the (different cells) equations results individual cells is consistent with the values obtained with the pocket calculator, even more puzzling behavior.

is unforgivable to me this type of "error" can not be present or be allowed in any type of program to boast (nothing economically by the way) be a "tool" of support for carrying out calculations. The errors committed by the spreadsheet can be so significant that could be the cause of the failure of an engineering job without thinking about the havoc that the administration would represent a small or medium business that relies on this software to "streamline" calculations.

This discovery is regrettable and generates a great deal of mistrust on this very widely used.

I have no choice but from now on to check with my financial calculator all mathematical operations that somehow compromise my work activities ... ...
